| Single Rope Technique In the mid-Seventies British cavers started changing to a technique of descending and ascending a single rope using friction brakes (descenders) and cam ascenders which grip the rope tightly when loaded. Descending a rope is known as abseiling and ascending the rope uses a technique called prusiking. The person on the rope relies entirely on their own equipment and skills for survival. With single rope technique (SRT) the competence and skill and of the individual are paramount. Used properly this method of ascent and descent provides an easy, comfortable and safe means of progress. Both abseiling and prusiking can be practised on the windmill before venturing underground. |
